A man who fatally stabbed a mother in front of her three-year-old daughter at Notting Hill Carnival has been jailed for life. Shakeil Thibou, 20, was convicted of murdering Cher Maximen at the Old Bailey last month. On Friday, he was sentenced to life in prison with a minimum term of 29 years. The incident took place on August 25th last year, just off the parade route.
Thibou’s attack, which was described as “brazen” by Judge Philip Katz KC, occurred in front of families and the police. The victim, Cher Maximen, 32, was with friends when she got caught up in a fight involving multiple men. Tragically, she passed away in the hospital six days later due to her injuries. Thibou, wearing a medical face mask and blue beanie hat, showed no emotion during the hearing and looked straight ahead the entire time.
The judge emphasized the severity of the crime, highlighting that the police were overwhelmed by the violence that unfolded. Thibou’s violent actions were captured on body-worn camera footage, painting a terrifying picture of the chaos that ensued. It was revealed that the defendant had brought a knife to the scene, and another blade was discovered during a search of his room. Despite expressing regret and remorse, Thibou’s actions spoke louder than his words, leaving a family devastated by the loss of their loved one.
The Maximen family, deeply affected by Cher’s untimely death, described her as a vibrant young woman who had a promising future ahead of her. Her cousin Lawrence Hoo fondly remembered her energy and presence, stating that she had a way of lighting up any room she entered. Cher’s grandmother, Vyleen Maximen, shared a heartbreaking victim impact statement in court, expressing the profound void left by Cher’s absence. The senseless act of violence not only robbed Cher of her life but also deprived her family of precious moments they had hoped to share with her.
The tragedy of Cher Maximen’s death serves as a stark reminder of the devastating impact of violence in our communities. The loss of a young life filled with potential has left a family shattered and seeking justice for their beloved Cher. As they navigate through their grief and anger, they hold onto cherished memories of a woman who brought light and joy wherever she went. Cher’s legacy lives on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her, reminding us all of the fragility of life and the importance of cherishing every moment we have with our loved ones.
