delivery-driver-mistakenly-deported-to-el-salvador-at-us-canada-border

Anger be swelling up against immigration authorities ’cause of the deportation of a food delivery driver who made a boo-boo and ended up in Canada. The guy, Ricardo Prada Vásquez, a 32-year-old from Venezuela, was dropping off some grub in January when he got lost and found himself in Canada. Tragic stuff.

So, Vásquez got an order from McDonald’s, right? Then, on his way to deliver it, he took a wrong turn and ended up on the Ambassador Bridge, which connects Detroit, Michigan to Windsor, Ontario. Locals say it’s a common mistake, but things went south real quick for Vásquez. He got locked up and sent back to El Salvador, all ’cause of a silly detour.

The New York Times spilled the tea first, saying Vásquez got caught on 15 January trying to head back to the US through a tunnel in Detroit. Then, US immigration nabbed him. Christine Sauve from the Michigan Immigrant Rights Center said it’s messed up that someone can vanish ’cause of a navigation error. Sounds shady to me.

Then, the Department of Homeland Security tweeted that Vásquez was booted back to El Salvador on 15 March. They also said the NYT was wrong about him not being on the list of people deported to El Salvador. Some friend of Vásquez in Chicago said he was scared about what might happen to him. The Trump admin sent a bunch of Venezuelans to El Salvador, and Vásquez went along for the ride. No one’s seen or heard from him since. Strange, right?

Experts in immigration are freaking out about the lack of fairness in these deportations. Sauve thinks there should be more oversight and legal checks before kicking people out. Seems like a valid concern.

Another lady from Guatemala got in trouble driving onto the Ambassador Bridge too. She and her kids got locked up by customs when they shouldn’t have. These cases are making people question how the US handles folks who make honest mistakes at the border. Sounds like a real mess.
