The government has recently announced that the sale and supply of single-use vapes will be banned starting from June 1st next year. This legislation aims to address the wasteful nature of single-use vapes and move towards a more sustainable future. Circular economy minister Mary Creagh highlighted the environmental impact of single-use vapes, referring to them as extremely wasteful and a common sight in towns and cities.
The ban on single-use vapes is seen as the first step towards creating a circular economy, where resources are used more efficiently, waste is reduced, and the country moves closer to achieving net zero emissions. This transition is expected to create thousands of jobs throughout the UK.
Last year, it was estimated that nearly five million single-use vapes were either littered or thrown away in general waste each week in the UK, a significant increase from previous years. The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) reported a 400% growth in vape usage in England between 2012 and 2023, with 9.1% of the British public now purchasing and using vapes.
Health minister Andrew Gwynne expressed concern over the high rate of teenage vape use, with a quarter of 11-15-year-olds reportedly using vapes last year. Disposable vapes are particularly popular among young people, making them more accessible and increasing the risk of addiction. The ban on single-use vapes is expected to not only benefit the environment but also reduce the appeal of vapes to children and prevent vulnerable young people from using them.
Libby Peake, the head of resources at Green Alliance, emphasized the detrimental impact of disposable vapes on both children and the environment. She criticized the unregulated growth of the disposable vape market and welcomed the government’s decision to ban these products.
The ban on single-use vapes signifies a shift towards a more sustainable and responsible approach to vaping in the UK. By reducing waste, protecting the environment, and safeguarding vulnerable young people from the harmful effects of vaping, this legislation sets a positive example for other countries to follow.
