Teenage Champion Makes Family Proud at World Gravy Wrestling Championships
The World Gravy Wrestling Championships recently took place at the Rose ‘N’ Bowl, a pub in Stacksteads, Rossendale, and it was a day filled with laughter, camaraderie, and a whole lot of gravy. Contestants from near and far gathered to participate in this unique event, where they wrestled in a pool of gravy for two minutes, showcasing their fancy dress, comedy skills, and overall entertainment value. The competition not only brought joy and entertainment to the spectators but also raised money for a noble cause – the East Lancashire Hospice, which supports individuals with life-limiting illnesses.
George Young Emerges Victorious
Among the competitors was 18-year-old George Young, a local from Stacksteads, who surprised himself and everyone else by emerging as the champion of the World Gravy Wrestling Championships. George’s journey to victory was unexpected, as he initially thought he would be eliminated in the early rounds. However, with strategic moves and a focus on conserving his energy, George managed to outlast his opponents and claim the top prize of a trophy and £100.
Reflecting on his win, George shared, “Because it is only a small town, it is a big thing, and (the trophy is) going to be there forever, really, so it’s pretty cool.” His triumph not only made him proud but also brought joy to his family. George’s mum was ecstatic, and his brothers, despite being covered in gravy, gave him a warm, gravy-soaked hug to celebrate his victory. The support and cheers from his friends further added to the memorable experience of winning the competition.
Hannah Havard’s Wild Experience
Another competitor, 30-year-old Hannah Havard, shared her firsthand experience of participating in the World Gravy Wrestling Championships. For Hannah, the event was nothing short of wild and unlike anything she had ever done before. Clad in a fluffy white Dalmatian onesie with a full Dalmatian hat and face paint, Hannah made a memorable entrance into the gravy pool. Despite being a novice to gravy wrestling, she managed to make it through the first round, showcasing her resilience and determination.
Describing the weight of her costume soaked in gravy, Hannah said, “All of the fur that I had on absorbed all the gravy. I had mittens, and one mitten was the same weight as a pint, so a full suit of that weighed me down so much that I could barely get up off the floor.” Despite the challenges, Hannah embraced the unique experience and enjoyed the support and camaraderie among the contestants and spectators.
A Day of Laughter and Support
The atmosphere at the World Gravy Wrestling Championships was described as buzzing, with participants and onlookers alike coming together to celebrate the spirit of the event. Laughter filled the air as contestants showcased their creativity and humor in the midst of a pool of gravy. While the competition was fierce, the sense of camaraderie and support among the participants added to the overall fun and enjoyment of the day.
Hannah Havard, who was raising money for Oakwood Dog Rescue in Hull, shared her motivation for getting involved in the competition. Having recently adopted her beloved chow chow, King Julius, from the rescue, Hannah saw the event as an opportunity to give back and support a cause close to her heart. Her decision to participate in the World Gravy Wrestling Championships was met with both surprise and admiration from her loved ones, who ultimately embraced her adventurous spirit and cheered her on during the competition.
In the end, while not everyone could emerge as the champion of the World Gravy Wrestling Championships, each participant walked away with unforgettable memories, new friendships, and a shared sense of joy and camaraderie. The event served as a reminder of the power of community, laughter, and coming together to support worthy causes, making it a day to remember for all involved.
